Sunday – WHY? Do you sometimes wonder why most of God’s people observe Sunday as a special day of worship? A good question deserves a good answer. Let’s make some observations. Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week which is Sunday. Any reading of the gospel stories makes this truth clear. The resurrected Christ also appeared to ten of His apostles on the first Sunday night after He arose bodily from the grave. He also appeared on the second Sunday night and told Thomas, "Touch me and see. A spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have" (John 20). The Holy Spirit came to live in the lives of God’s people or His Church on Sunday that we now call Pentecost Sunday, nearly two months after Christ’s resurrection. Simon Peter also preached his sermon on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus on Sunday. On that day about three thousand Jews from all over the known world believed in Jesus and accepted Him as Lord and Savior. At Troas or the Greek city of Troy, Paul preached to Christians who had assembled for worship on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). Paul also instructed the Christians of Corinth to bring their contributions or offerings for God’s work on the first day of the week (1 Corinthians 16:2). On the first day of the week, Jesus appeared in His glorified, immortal body to the Apostle John on the Island of Patmos (Revelation 1:10). He worshipped Jesus who was also called the Alpha and Omega, the same designations given to God, the Eternal Father. The Bible states that we are to worship God in Spirit and in Truth. Any place where believers gather, and at any time, Jesus said that He would be with them. We may worship God at any hour of the day or night and any day of the week. We should set aside time each day for personal or family worship and we need a special time every week when as a Christian community or group we may come together. The great need in every life is to worship the Lord of grace and glory. Get the worship habit going and you will be blessed.
