You Will Receive Power"Ye Shall Receive Power""Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit comes upon you..." (Acts 1:8)The late Stephen Olford told the story of a man in South Africa who bought a new Rolls Royce. When a neighbor asked about the horse power of the engine, he could not answer him. The owner’s manual had no information bout it. So, he sent a telegram to the dealer in London: NEW ROLLS. HOW MANY HORSE POWER? He didn’t have to wait long before receiving a response: ADEQUATE, SIR, ADEQUATE.The power one receives when he receives the Holy Spirit is adequate. Always adequate. For any situation. Adequate. Sadly, most Christians have very little appreciation for the power the believer has when he in indwelt by the Holy Spirit.I met Perry Lambert when he came to our home to visit my grandfather. Apparently, his father knew my grandfather. Perry was a lineman for the Mississippi Power and Light Corporation and he was helping run the first power line through rural parts of the Mississippi Delta. He could hardly wait to tell an amusing story. They were running the line from Crenshaw, MS, north into the hills near the community of Sarah. One morning when they showed up for work an elderly farmer was waiting for them. As they dug the huge, deep holes with those long handled post hole diggers, the old farmer moved from one spot to another with them. He maintained a respectable distance so as not to interfere with their work. When they stopped for lunch and drove back into town for a meal at a local café, the man walked home. Within a few minutes of the time they returned to begin digging new holes the elderly farmer joined them. He never said a word, but when they moved he moved. At some point they began stringing the line and just as they reached foot of the first hill, the man moved over close to a lineman, gestured toward the top of the hill, and courteously asked, "Mr., do you really believe that stuff is going to climb that hill?"Over the years I heard that story repeated many times, and people never cease to laugh at the old farmer’s ignorance of the power of electricity. I also found that story amusing. What I do not find amusing is the ignorance of many Christians as to the power available to every Christian when he or she receives the Holy Spirit. We need to understand that God has placed His Spirit in the heart of every believer at the point of salvation. Whatever challenge, trial, or test we face, He is adequate. More than adequate.
