Senator Shot – Senator Helps! One evening after a hard day on Capitol Hill, Senator John Stennis headed home hoping for a little rest. When he got out of his car two men came out of the darkness and attacked the senator. They robbed him, and shot him twice. News of the shooting of Senator Stennis, who was the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, shocked Washington, and the entire nation. Another senator, while on his way home, heard the news on his radio, and immediately turned his car around and headed back toward Senator Stennis' office. When he came into the office, he found the staff of the injured senator swamped with calls about his condition. He spotted an empty switchboard, took off his coat, and began to voluntarily take phone calls. He worked until daylight, basically unnoticed by the staff. Sometime that next day, he stood up from his seat, put on his coat, and said quietly to the operator next to him, "I'm Mark Hatfield, glad to have helped out." Then Senator Hatfield quietly walked out of the office. The news reporters could not believe the story. They never would have believed that a conservative republican would spend hours doing a dismal task like answering phones for a liberal democrat's office. Senator Mark Hatfield could have sent a card, or put out a statement to offer his concern for Senator Stennis, but he instead decided to put his concern into action. It is not enough to just tell people about Jesus with our words. We must show people Jesus through our works. Is that not what our Lord asks us to do? James tells us that, “Faith without works is dead.” Let us show our faith in Christ through what we do and not just what we say! Dr. J.
