The Chinese Boy-HeroDuring the opening ceremonies for the Olympics in China, a 9 year old boy accompanied Yao Ming who carried the Chinese flag. The boy was a national hero. He survived the terrible earthquake that shook China prior to the Olympics. Then, he rushed back into his crumbling school building to rescue two of his classmates. He took a great risk to re-enter the building, crawling among the rubble and trembling remains of the school, to pull out the two boys and save their lives. A news reporter asked the young lad why he chose to go back into the school building to rescue his school mates when it put his own life at risk. The young Chinese hero replied, “I had to! I am the hall monitor and it was my responsibility.”The story made me think of how few people in the Lord’s work take their responsibilities that seriously. If we worshipped, tithed, witnessed, prayed, and did faithfully all that our Lord has given to us as responsibilities, what a difference it would make in our local churches. It is a shame when a 9 year old boy in China takes his job more seriously as a school hall monitor than most born again believers do in God’s Kingdom work.Dr. J. Mike MinnixEditorPastorLife
