Ed The Wonder HorseI remember reading a story told by the late Vance Havner. Vance was an evangelist and had a wonderful wit about him and told the story about Ed The Wonder Horse to illustrate the danger of trying to grow a church the wrong way.Vance said that there was a preacher who was trying to grow his church. He was looking for some new fangled way of reaching people. He advertised a special Sunday worship service and invited everyone to come and see Ed The Wonder Horse. As the special day arrived the church was packed with members and visitors. The horse trainer led Ed The Wonder Horse up to the platform. It was a beautiful animal with a long flowing mane. The trainer said, "Okay Ed, how much is one plus one?" And Ed stomped two times. The people were awed. Then the trainer said, "Ed, how much is three times three?" Ed stomped nine times on the platform floor. The people broke into applause. Then the trainer said, "Ed, how many hypocrites are in this church?" The horse broke into a trot across the stage! The best way to grow a church is to love Jesus, depend on the Holy Spirit's power promised in Acts 1:8, witness to people about the saving grace of God, invite people to church, worship with gladness, teach and preach the Bible as God's Word, be faithful, involve every member possible in ministry and have a church fellowship filled with love for people!Dr. J.
