Balance

John 4:23-24, But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

In our college days Sandra and I worked for a tree nursery. Most of the live trees were sold to nurseries in the northern states. I drove one of the large trucks that delivered the trees. My first lesson as a trucker was learning to balance the load. The larger trees were placed in key areas and the smaller ones were located to provide the balance. A balanced load made the driving easier and saved fuel. It also kept me from being stopped at a weigh station and fined for an incorrect load.

Christian living can be difficult at times. Our Lord’s direction concerning balance makes the walk easier. In a conversation with the woman at the well Jesus reveals the balance for worship. The balance is spirit and truth. Some believers are out of balance. Some are so strong on truth that they never enjoy the blessings of the Holy Spirit. Others are out of balance because they ignore the standard of truth in their behavior. Walking with Christ requires understanding the truth of Scripture and applying that truth while being joyful and jubilant. It is sad that so many Christians never enjoy the balance.

Have you checked your balance lately? Do you get frustrated with legalism and miss the spirit of grace? Have you been so focused on being blessed that you have ignored God’s clear truth in Scripture? Take the advice of someone who has been guilty of both. Walk with Christ in a balanced life. Make God’s Word your guide for living and worship Him with expressive joy. You’ll be glad you did.

You get a lot more flies with honey than with vinegar!
