Dr. Carter is married to Margaret Wade Carter - they have a daughter and Son-in-law, Cheryl and Steve Lewis; and, a son, Terry. Dr. Carter was educated at Mercer University (A.B.), Macon, Georgia 1957; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), Louisville, Kentucky, 1960; and received a Doctor of Divinity from Gardner Webb College, Boiling Springs, North Carolina, 1974.
He served as Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church, Jonesboro, Georgia for many years. The church grew dramatically under his leadership averaging more than 2,000 in Sunday School with a record attendance of 4,189. When he was named Pastor Emeritus March, 2000, the church had over 7,000 members and a budget of $4.5 million dolloars. First, Jonesboro was frequently number one in the state of Georgia in missions giving and volunteerism. Previously, Dr. Carter pastored at First Baptist Church, Cherryville, North Carolina, and at First Baptist Church, Whitesburg, Kentucky.
