J. Emmett Henderson

Dr. J. Emmett Henderson served for many years as Specialist of the Office of Ethics and Public Affairs of the Georgia Baptist Convention. He served for twenty-three years as executive director of the Georgia Council on Moral and Civic Concerns. He also served as pastor of three Georgia Baptist churches: First Baptist Church of Norcross, Sylvan Hills Baptist Church of Atlanta and First Baptist Church of Cornelia.
He is a graduate of: University of Georgia, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Columbia Theological Seminary, and Emory University. He studied at the Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary and completed clinical pastoral education at the Georgia Baptist Medical Center. During his pastorate in Cornelia, Dr. Henderson served as a group therapist treating alcohol and drug addiction.
Dr. Henderson served for ten years as a member and vice-president of the board of directors of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and as chairman of the board and trustee of Truett McConnell College. He has served as a member of the Chaplains Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. He also served as chairman of the Christian Life Commission, as member and consultant of the Public Affairs Committee of the Georgia Baptist Convention, as President of the Georgia Baptist Historical Society and as moderator of the Gwinnett Metro Baptist Association.
As director of Ethics and Public Affairs, he currently serves the Christian Life Commission and the Public Affairs Committee of the Georgia Baptist Convention.
Dr. Henderson has written extensively on moral issues. Many of his writings have been published in the Christian Index and the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, the publication of the United Methodist Church in Georgia.
Dr. and Mrs. Henderson have four children and seven grandchildren.
