J.W. Hutchens has retired from the staff of the North American Mission Board in Alpharetta, GA where he served as Coordinator of Town and Country Associations. Prior to that he served as Director of Church Growth and Associational Evangelism for five years. He provided administrative leadership in planning, organizing, and staffing the area. He and his wife, Joyce, have three children: Dawn, Chip, and Jeff. They have three grandchildren: Brandon, Taylor, and Logan.
J.W. was born July 27, 1936, in Electra, Texas. He graduated from Bowie High School, Bowie, Texas; Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas, B.A.; and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, Texas, BD, M. Div.
He served as pastor of several churches in Texas before becoming Director of Church Stewardship for the Texas Baptist Convention in 1974. In 1977 He became Director of Evangelism for the Virginia Baptist Convention, followed by the same position in the North Carolina Baptist Convention. Later he moved to the North American Mission Board of the SBC to serve in several positions before his retirement.
J.W. was voted Man of the Year in Nocona, Texas in 1971. He served as President, State Stewardship Directors, 1977-78; Chairperson, Here's Hope, HMB media committee, 1986-90; President, State Directors of Evangelism, 1989-90; Coordinator, SBC Witness/Giving Life, 1989-92; and, Chairperson, Share Jesus, HMB media committee, 1990-92.
He enjoys golf, reading, and fishing in his leisure time.
